(Head Office: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; President and COO: Shuichiro Takahashi), Daiken Corporation (Head Office: Kita-ku, Osaka; President and CEO: Masanori Bakuda), and Taisei Ready-mix Concrete Co. (Head office: Mitoyo City, Kagawa Prefecture; Representative Director: Junya Miyake), in cooperation with Takuma Fishery Cooperative Association (President: Jun Yamashita), a long-time fishery operator in Mitoyo City, have begun testing the effectiveness of newly developed marine reclamation materials in actual sea areas.
This marine restoration material is being developed using naturally occurring materials as raw materials with the aim of creating a saprophytic substrate that will contribute to the flourishing of seaweeds. Through this development and future business development, we aim to contribute to the regeneration and conservation of marine life and the marine environment, and to enhance the richness of the oceans.
Background of Efforts
According to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), 691 TP3T of the world's biodiversity has been lost over the past 50 years (*1), with an estimated economic loss of $44 trillion (*2). In particular, the rate of decline of marine life, which accounts for 70% of the Earth's total, has been reported to be particularly severe, having decreased by half in the 42 years since 1970 (*3).
One of the environments considered important for maintaining biodiversity in the marine environment is the coastal environment formed mainly by seaweed beds and seagrasses, which are not only home to many marine organisms, so called the "cradle of the sea," but have also attracted attention in recent years as a storehouse of carbon (blue carbon). On the other hand, the coastal environment has been deteriorating due to changes in nutrients coming in from the land and rising sea water temperatures.
This project is the result of a joint search for new business opportunities between RIVANES and Daiken Kogyo, a general building materials company, which began in FY2023. Daiken Kogyo, which has been involved in upcycling unused resources since its founding, has at the core of its technology been exploring the co-creation of "manufacturing that regenerates and preserves the environment," and Taisei Ready-mixed Concrete, which is involved in coastal regeneration in Mitoyo City, agreed to participate in this project in summer 2024. Now, we are taking on the challenge of restoring the marine environment together with fishermen from Takuma Fishery Cooperative Association and Mitoyo City, who have cooperated with us in the field demonstration.

Demonstration Test Overview
On January 21, 2025, test materials for marine rehabilitation materials developed by Daiken Kogyo through this initiative were installed in the waters of Mitutoyo City. Several types of materials have been developed with different structures and compositions, and the goal of this demonstration test is to verify a more effective method for seaweed propagation. During the demonstration period, Taisei Ready-mixed Concrete and other companies will investigate recovery and creation trends, and analyze them for the development of new materials that will contribute to marine restoration.
Further details will be announced as efforts progress.

Liberace, Inc.
For us, a company that upholds the philosophy of "realizing the development of science and technology and contributing to the earth," this development and demonstration project to restore the marine environment and ecosystem through the power of science and technology is exactly the kind of activity that we should be promoting. We will continue to promote efforts to enrich the oceans in Mitutoyo and other regions by gathering knowledge and technologies of various researchers and companies, not only in this demonstration test.
Daiken Corporation
As our main business has been construction materials, this is our first attempt to develop marine reclamation materials and represents a new challenge for us. In this context, this demonstration test was born out of co-creation activities with Taisei Ready-mixed Concrete Co. and LIVANES Corporation, and was launched with the cooperation of Takuma Fishing Cooperative Association and Mitoyo City. Our role is to manufacture products by utilizing the material development technology we have cultivated. We will continue to promote research and development of materials that positively affect the ecosystem and contribute to environmental restoration and recovery through our activities with everyone.
Taisei Ready-mix Concrete Co.
As a regional company based along the coast of the Seto Inland Sea, we recognize that the recent deterioration of the marine environment is a situation that we cannot afford to ignore. However, as a small, medium, and micro enterprise, we are limited in what we can do.
The ongoing degradation of marine environments and ecological transitions around the world may no longer be something that can be solved by a single organization. By multiplying unique and specialized technologies and skills, and combining them with our desire to restore the oceans in our region, we hope to find a way out of the situation.
Mitutoyo City
We are very pleased that this initiative has started in order to pass on the rich marine environment of our city to the next generation. As seaweed beds continue to decrease and the marine environment deteriorates, the cooperation of local fishermen and related companies to develop and demonstrate marine restoration materials that utilize new technologies is an important step toward protecting and restoring the richness of the sea.
The city's ocean is the foundation of the local economy, including fisheries and tourism, and plays an important role in the development of a town that coexists with its rich natural environment. We hope that this demonstration test will lead to the recovery of marine life and environmental improvement, and we also hope that this initiative will spread to coastal areas throughout Japan and contribute to the conservation of sustainable marine resources.
The City of Tokyo will continue to support this project in cooperation with all parties concerned to ensure its success.
Takuma Fishery Cooperative Association
We want to restore the Seto Inland Sea to its former glory. With this in mind, the Takuma Fisheries Cooperative participated in this project to install test materials for marine restoration in cooperation with companies, local governments, and related organizations.
We believe that this program will contribute to the promotion of sustainable fisheries for fishermen, and will also make a significant contribution to the conservation of the local natural environment. Through this initiative, we will continue to make efforts in environmental conservation activities with the aim of passing on the bounty of the sea to the next generation.
